The jailed ex-leader has lodged an appeal following a Kuala Lumpur court’s 1MDB verdict that added 15 years plus multibillion-ringgit penalties.

Overview

  • Najib Razak filed a notice on Dec 29 to appeal his 1MDB conviction and sentence, his lawyer confirmed.
  • The High Court on Dec 26 found him guilty on 25 counts tied to about RM2.3 billion, imposing 15 years in prison and an RM11.4 billion fine.
  • The court also ordered recovery of RM2.08 billion linked to the offences and set default jail terms if payments are not made.
  • The additional sentence will begin after his current SRC term ends in 2028, subject to possible reduction for good behaviour.
