Naidu to Release HNSS Waters to Kuppam on Saturday

The Kuppam branch routes Krishna flood flows to tail-end Chittoor through a widened canal network to strengthen irrigation as well as drinking service.

Overview

  • The ceremony is scheduled at the Paramasamudram tank near Kuppam on August 30, with a Jala Harathi planned to mark the release.
  • HNSS is a ₹4,000-crore lift-irrigation scheme drawing up to 40 tmcft from Srisailam during roughly 120 flood days via a 554-km main canal and 12 major lifts.
  • At full scale, the project targets irrigation for about 6.03 lakh acres and 4 tmcft of drinking water, supported by eight reservoirs totaling 9.05 tmcft and 672 MW of pumping capacity.
  • Built in two phases, Phase I reaches Jeedipalle for 1.98 lakh acres using 14 tmcft, with Phase II extending to Adavipalle for 4.04 lakh acres using 26 tmcft.
  • The Kuppam branch, fed from the Punganur main canal, is slated to stabilize 6,300 acres through 110 minor tanks and supply drinking water to over five lakh people across eight mandals, as flows already pushed via Kadiri are being augmented by Tungabhadra water mixing at PABR; officials said about 13 tmcft could fill roughly 400 tanks this season, while some branch canals still await releases.
