Nagaon Renames Dhakapatty as Rupkonwar Chowk to Honor Cultural Icon

Local traders will have one month to update signage in line with the tribute to Assam’s cultural icon

Overview

  • District Commissioner Devashish Sharma declared on August 12 that the stretch from RD Store to Sayar Store, formerly known as Dhakapatty, is now Rupkonwar Chowk and the adjacent segment toward greater Barabazar has been renamed Barabazar.
  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the renaming with officials framing it as a tribute to Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, popularly called Rupkonwar, whose bust and commemorations already mark the area.
  • Authorities noted that the order followed a viral August 9 road-rage assault in the locality but stressed that the change reflects community sentiment and regional heritage.
  • Traders in the affected zone must replace commercial signboards with the new names within the next month.
  • A traffic circle is planned at the newly christened Rupkonwar Chowk to enhance infrastructure and reinforce the cultural dedication.
