Nagaland Seeks Home Ministry Order to Clear Final Assam Rifles Parcel for Dimapur Airport Expansion

The chief minister has asked Amit Shah to issue an as-is transfer directive for the remaining 18.8 acres to unblock the airport’s Phase-I development.

Overview

  • On July 2, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio formally urged Home Minister Amit Shah to vacate 18.8 acres held by Assam Rifles for the first phase expansion of Dimapur Airport.
  • Assam Rifles have moved into a new training centre and school at Shokhuvi village and are ready to hand over the land once the Ministry of Home Affairs approves the transfer.
  • A July 1 high-level meeting chaired by Additional Secretary Abhijit Sinha addressed the stalled book transfer between Assam Rifles and the Airports Authority of India but did not reach a final decision.
  • Officials warn the pending handover at Nagaland’s only commercial airport is holding up the AAI master plan and creating operational and safety challenges.
  • State authorities are pressing for an as-is transfer without structural compensation to enable immediate commencement of runway and terminal upgrades.
