Naga Sea Serpent Installation Nears Activation in Golden Gate Park

Rewatering of the dry pond will complete the park’s largest public art piece before its scheduled unveiling later this month.

  • The 100-foot Naga sculpture now stands in place at Golden Gate Park’s Rainbow Falls Pond with its concrete base fully exposed.
  • Park officials will reactivate the 50-foot Rainbow Falls waterfall this week to fill the pond around the serpent.
  • Illuminate has slated a family-friendly public unveiling on July 26 and an official night-time lighting ceremony on July 28.
  • Artist Cjay Roughgarden and more than 250 volunteers spent a year assembling the five-hump serpent with over 5,000 hand-shaped, eco-friendly aluminum scales.
  • Fundraising continues for a complementary shipwreck seating area that is planned for installation in October.
