Nabu’s Nationwide Winter Bird Count Kicks Off Across Germany

Public one-hour tallies submitted online or by post through January 19 feed a long-running dataset on urban birdlife.

Overview

  • The 16th edition of the Stunde der Wintervögel runs from Friday to Sunday, with observations from windows, gardens, parks, and feeders.
  • Participants watch for one hour and report the highest number of each species seen at the same time to ensure comparable year-to-year data.
  • Results can be submitted at www.stundederwintervoegel.de or via the Nabu Vogelwelt app, with postal returns accepted until January 19, 2026.
  • The count is organized by Nabu with the Bavarian LBV, and about 122,000 people took part nationwide last year.
  • Nabu expert Julian Heiermann notes frost and snow may boost feeder visits and recommends high-quality grain and fat foods, with sunflower seeds widely accepted.
