Overview

  • NAACP President Derrick Johnson said Trump’s record shows he is working to eliminate civil rights and does not align with the organization’s mission.
  • In April the NAACP filed a lawsuit to prevent the Department of Education from withholding federal funds from schools with diversity programs.
  • This marks the first time since the group’s founding in 1909 that it has declined to invite a sitting U.S. president to its convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • The NAACP previously hosted presidents across party lines, including George W. Bush at its 2006 convention despite criticism of his handling of Hurricane Katrina relief.
  • The White House has yet to issue a response to requests for comment on the exclusion decision.
