Mysuru Council Clears Grade-I Upgrade, Triggering Greater Mysuru Expansion Plan

State leaders have ordered a 15–20 year, technology-led blueprint to guide the enlarged city’s growth without repeating Bengaluru’s urban problems.

Overview

  • Mysuru City Corporation approved moving to Grade-I status, enabling the merger of one City Municipal Council, four Town Panchayats and several Gram Panchayats to expand its limits from 86.31 to 333.46 sq km.
  • Officials approved preparation of a detailed project report for a Rs 2,000 crore Peripheral Ring Road as part of the new planning framework.
  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed a scientific, long-term plan that preserves Mysuru’s culture and prioritizes solutions for traffic, drainage, drinking water and sewage treatment.
  • City leaders say the upgrade will extend services like underground drainage and waste collection to outer areas and will require hiring about 500 additional MCC staff, with the change expected to attract higher State and Central funding.
  • The push revives a proposal the state formally withdrew on Sept. 16 due to finance concerns, and municipal elections may be delayed as ward delimitation and reservation exercises proceed.
