Mysuru Census Maps 1,21,789 Trees Across All 65 Wards

Expert teams are verifying species, canopy, carbon metrics ahead of a final scientific report due in August 2026 that will guide urban planning, heritage protection, carbon accounting

Overview

  • The citizen-led Nammara Tree Census recorded 1,21,789 geo-tagged trees within Mysuru City Corporation limits using field surveys completed between October 2025 and April 2026.
  • Project leader Trishika Kumari Wadiyar submitted a preliminary report to Deputy Commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy after volunteers finished the roadside and street-level survey.
  • More than 520 volunteers and 21 partner organisations collected GPS coordinates, species notes, trunk girth and health data using a digital platform developed by the Centre for Advanced Learning.
  • Experts are now verifying species identification, ward-wise density, canopy cover and carbon sequestration figures with a public data portal planned and the verified database slated to be handed over to the MCC with a detailed report in August 2026.
  • Organisers say the verified inventory will inform planting drives, avenue-tree protection, legal recognition for heritage trees and local measures to reduce heat and improve air quality while the next phase will map trees in parks, institutional grounds and temple premises.
