Mysterious Canine Respiratory Illness Spreads Across U.S.

Veterinarians and researchers scramble to identify unknown pathogen as dog owners are urged to take preventive measures.

An unidentified respiratory illness is affecting dogs across the U.S., with symptoms including coughing, nasal and eye discharge, sneezing, lethargy, and disinterest in food. In severe cases, dogs can develop pneumonia and some have died.
First reported in Oregon in August 2023, the illness has since spread to other states including California, Colorado, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Illinois, and Georgia.
Despite symptoms similar to common canine illnesses like kennel cough and respiratory infections, tests for these conditions come back negative. The cause of the illness remains unknown.
Veterinarians advise dog owners to keep their pets up to date on vaccinations, avoid high-traffic areas for dogs like parks and kennels, and seek veterinary attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
Researchers are still working to identify the pathogen causing the illness, which could take months. In the meantime, they recommend dog owners exercise caution and take preventive measures.
