Myanmar Democracy Leader's Ally Dies in Custody

Zaw Myint Maung, a key figure in Myanmar's National League for Democracy, passed away from leukaemia shortly after being released from prison.

Zaw Myint Maung, 72, was a close associate of Aung San Suu Kyi and served as a vice-chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
He was arrested following the 2021 military coup in Myanmar and imprisoned on charges widely seen as politically motivated.
Maung had been battling leukaemia since 2019 and was recently released from custody on health grounds before his death.
The National Unity Government praised Maung for his unwavering commitment to democracy and opposition to military rule.
Maung's death highlights the ongoing repression of NLD members, many of whom face imprisonment or have died in custody since the coup.
