Muzaffarnagar Police Fix Viral ₹20.74 Lakh Traffic Challan to ₹4,000

Police attribute the inflated figure to a data-entry slip that combined Section 207 with the ₹4,000 penalty.

Overview

  • Scooter rider Anmol Singhal was stopped on November 4 at the Gandhi Colony checkpoint in the Nai/New Mandi area for riding without a helmet and lacking licence and vehicle documents.
  • The scooter was seized under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which permits seizure when required documents are not produced.
  • SP (Traffic) Atul Chaubey said a sub-inspector mistakenly entered the section code in the fine field, merging “207” with ₹4,000 to display ₹20,74,000.
  • Singhal’s photo of the challan went viral on social media, prompting an internal review and a correction setting the payable amount at ₹4,000.
  • The rider’s family says the revised challan is yet to be paid and the vehicle has not been released.
