Musi Floods Hyderabad as Reservoir Outflows Ease After Peak Releases

Bus services from MGBS remain suspended during Dasara travel.

Overview

  • Authorities operated multiple gates at Osman Sagar and Himayatsagar, pushing combined discharges to roughly 34,000–35,000 cusecs in the largest outflow in decades before reducing or closing gates as inflows declined.
  • Low-lying neighborhoods around Chaderghat and Moosanagar were inundated and the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station was submerged, with HYDRAA, NDRF and GHMC evacuating more than 1,000 residents and reporting no loss of life.
  • TGSRTC diverted thousands of services to LB Nagar, Uppal, Aramghar and JBS during the holiday rush, and passengers faced confusion at ad hoc boarding points as electricity at MGBS was cut for safety.
  • Many residents said alerts did not convey the timing or scale of the releases, while HMWS&SB officials said gate operations followed manuals with advance notices issued to departments and continuous monitoring of inflows.
  • K.T. Rama Rao accused the government of mismanaging releases, a charge officials reject, as experts renewed criticism of siting MGBS and metro structures within the Musi river system and urged stronger buffers and planning reform.
