Musi Floods Hyderabad After Reservoir Releases, Closing MGBS as Evacuations Continue

Gate releases from Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar following heavy upstream rain drove the surge through low-lying neighborhoods.

Overview

  • Operations at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station remained suspended on Saturday, with roughly 2,500 services diverted to LB Nagar, Uppal, Aramghar and Jubilee Bus Station pending a Sunday assessment.
  • After intense rainfall across the catchment, operators lifted multiple gates at both reservoirs and released up to about 35,000 cusecs into the Musi, pushing levels over bridges and roads.
  • HYDRAA, NDRF, SDRF and GHMC evacuated about 2,000 stranded bus passengers and shifted over 1,000 residents, with officials reporting no loss of life.
  • Levels began to recede in parts of the city by afternoon, but areas such as Chaderghat and Moosanagar saw rapid overnight inundation, forcing families to rooftops and causing significant household losses.
  • A dispute over the timing and scale of gate operations intensified between BRS leaders and state ministers, as crews also reported washed-away retaining walls and damage at the under-construction Moosarambagh bridge.
