Museo Universitario del Chopo Unveils 50th Anniversary Retrospective and Public Program

Featuring 480 objects, the retrospective spotlights the museum’s countercultural legacy as it readies archival releases for wider public access

Overview

  • The retrospective opens August 21 and runs through December 7 with around 480 objects drawn from both internal archives and external collections.
  • A year-long collective curatorial process was led by a team of in-house curators alongside collaborators Wendy Cabrera Rubio, Pío Longo and APRDELESP.
  • Restoration work on the museum’s original Jugendstil iron structure and historic features is scheduled for completion before the exhibition’s debut.
  • Several galleries will be renamed to honor figures such as Elena Urrutia, Jorge Pantoja and José María ‘Chema’ Covarrubias in recognition of their contributions.
  • The program also includes the Agentxs Chopo educational initiative for children, an opening concert by Astrid Hadad, a Macabro Filmoteca collaboration and commemorative publications through March 2026.
