Murder Warrant Issued for Suspect in Alabama Teen’s Death After Police Chase

Hartselle investigators cite video of the suspect running a red light into a minivan carrying four teens.

Overview

  • Traffic homicide investigators obtained a Sept. 10 warrant charging Archie Hale, 40, with murder, with officers standing by to take custody when he is released from the hospital.
  • The crash occurred Sept. 6 around 8:30 p.m. at Highway 36 and U.S. 31 in Hartselle during a Priceville pursuit over suspected DUI and moving violations.
  • Police say video shows Hale entered the intersection at a very high speed on a red light before striking the minivan, after reviews of dash, area, and patrol cameras and attempts to deploy tire deflation devices.
  • Six people were hospitalized, including Hale, his passenger, and four boys in the minivan; 17-year-old Tristan Hollis died and his graveside service is scheduled for Thursday.
  • Hale will be held without bond on the murder charge, additional charges are expected, and Priceville Officer Garry Chapman—son of Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman—remains on paid leave during an internal review as Hartselle seeks ALEA support.
