Murder Trial of Former Ohio Deputy Jason Meade Begins
Prosecutors Argue Casey Goodson Jr. Was Unarmed at Time of Fatal Shooting
- Jason Meade, a former Ohio sheriff’s deputy, is on trial for the murder of 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr., who was shot six times, five times in the back, as he entered his grandmother’s house in 2020.
- Prosecutors argue that Goodson was holding a bag of sandwiches and his keys, not a gun as Meade claimed, when he was shot. Goodson's gun was found in his kitchen with the safety on.
- Meade’s defense team maintains that Goodson waved and pointed a firearm at Meade, and that Meade feared for his safety and the safety of others, justifying the use of deadly force.
- Meade was not wearing a body camera at the time of the shooting, so there is no video evidence. A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed by Goodson’s family.
- The jury, made up of four men and eight women, was seated on Tuesday. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
