Overview

  • James Edward Plover was charged with second-degree murder on July 5 and remains in custody ahead of his July 10 court appearance.
  • Kelowna RCMP say Plover attacked McCourt and another woman with a hammer after responding to a hit-and-run report near Spall Road and Enterprise Way, killing McCourt and seriously injuring the second victim.
  • A June 2024 “K-file” assault and threats case against Plover was stayed less than six weeks after he posted bail despite McCourt’s public warnings about his ex-partner’s instability.
  • McCourt’s father, Shane, has taken on care of her two young daughters and a GoFundMe campaign is raising money for their living expenses and funeral costs.
  • Premier David Eby and the Battered Women’s Support Services have called on the federal government to tighten bail rules and address judicial shortcomings to better safeguard domestic violence survivors.
