Murder Charge in Canaryville Killing as Chicago Probes Labor Day Weekend Drive-By Attacks

Detectives are seeking suspects in the Bronzeville and Humboldt Park shootings after police counted at least 32 people shot citywide.

Overview

  • Daniel Navas Maiver, 19, was arrested early Friday in the 7400 block of South Harvard Avenue and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in Thursday’s Canaryville shooting.
  • The shooting in a vacant lot near West 47th Street killed 15-year-old Alex Durante and wounded a 12-year-old boy; Maiver appeared in court Sunday.
  • Seven people were wounded around 11:10 p.m. Saturday when gunfire came from a passing vehicle into a crowd in the 3500 block of South State Street in Bronzeville, with all victims listed in good condition.
  • Four people were shot about 1:11 a.m. Sunday in a drive-by on the 2700 block of West Haddon Avenue in Humboldt Park, and all were reported in good condition.
  • Police reported at least 32 people shot and three killed over the Labor Day weekend, and no arrests were announced in the two drive-by investigations.
