Murcia Halts Classes in Cartagena Area as Red Rain Alert Triggers Flood Plan

Regional leaders press the central government to carry out delayed CHS flood‑control projects.

Overview

  • AEMET has a red-level rain warning in force for the day, and from 10:00 Friday classes and activities are suspended in Cartagena, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, La Unión, Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco, Fuente Álamo and Mazarrón.
  • The suspension also applies to Santomera and Beniel and to designated pedanías in Murcia, Lorca and Totana under the red warning.
  • The Inunmur civil protection plan is activated with emergency services prepared to intervene and continuous coordination with local mayors.
  • Government spokesman Marcos Ortuño calls for urgent state action on CHS works, citing delays affecting lamination reservoirs and ramblas interventions and criticizing a Tabala reservoir timeline not before late 2027.
  • The region reports more than €75 million invested since 2019 in prevention and adaptation, and it has asked Minister Sara Aagesen for a meeting to prioritize basin projects and improve warnings and emergency coordination.
