Munich's Second Stammstrecke Project Advances with Major Tunnel Construction Contract

Overview

  • The second Stammstrecke project in Munich has entered a new phase with the awarding of a major contract to Implenia and Hochtief for tunnel construction between Marienhof and Ostbahnhof.
  • The contract, valued in the high hundreds of millions of euros, includes two traffic tunnels, a rescue tunnel, and the Tiefbahnhof München-Ost underground station.
  • Construction for this phase will begin in June 2025 and is expected to be completed by May 2033, with tunnel boring set to start in 2027.
  • Three large tunnel boring machines, each with a diameter of up to 8.7 meters, will excavate a 2.9-kilometer section of the tunnel over two years starting in 2027.
  • The overall project, aimed at improving Munich's S-Bahn transit system, spans 10 kilometers and is now projected to be completed between 2035 and 2037.
