Munich Unveils Full-Scale Mock-Up of XXL S‑Bahn Trains Set to Enter Service From 2028

  • Deutsche Bahn, the Free State of Bavaria and Siemens presented a walk‑through 1:1 model at IAA Mobility on Munich’s Königsplatz, open to visitors from September 9 to 14.
  • Each new train will be about 202 meters long with a fully continuous interior, wider 1.40‑meter doors and five multi‑purpose areas, offering roughly 1,800 total capacity and 480 seats.
  • Accessibility and comfort features include step‑free gangways, wheelchair spaces with eye‑level displays, Bluetooth for hearing aids, 168 information screens, Wi‑Fi, USB‑C charging and climate control rated to 45°C.
  • Onboard technology will include ETCS, Automatic Train Operation and Train Integrity Monitoring, plus remote software updates and diagnostic systems intended to support future digital operation.
  • The rollout targets first passenger service at the end of 2028 with about 90 trains in operation by 2032 under the long‑term leasing arrangement with Siemens.
