Munich to Evacuate 7,000 for Sunday Defusing of 500-Kilogram WWII Bomb

Protective water-filled containers permit a smaller safety zone for the planned disarmament.

Overview

  • The unexploded bomb was uncovered during earthworks at the edge of Westfriedhof in Moosach and lies about 1.20 meters deep.
  • Authorities ordered a 700-meter evacuation zone to be cleared by Sunday at 9 a.m., with defusing scheduled to begin around 11:30 a.m. and the overall operation expected to last about three hours.
  • Explosive ordnance specialists currently assess the device as stable, though two impact fuzes must be unscrewed and corrosion could slow the work.
  • Twenty-six water-filled shipping containers encircle the site to mitigate blast effects and enable the reduced evacuation radius.
  • An information hotline is available and a temporary care center will open at Gymnasium Moosach, with MVG limiting tram line 20 and rerouting buses 51, 143, 164 and 165 while U- and S-Bahn services continue to run.
