Munich Tightens New Year Fireworks Rules With 150‑Meter Ban Around Hellabrunn Zoo

Officials cite limited legal authority for a citywide ban.

Overview

  • For the first time, a 150‑meter protective zone around Tierpark Hellabrunn bans all pyrotechnics on December 31 and January 1, enforced around the clock on both days.
  • City center restrictions run from December 31 at 21:00 to January 1 at 02:00 under municipal orders.
  • Within the Mittlerer Ring, bangers are prohibited while rockets, batteries and fountains remain permitted; in the Altstadt, those items are banned as well.
  • The Altstadt zone covers Stachus, Neuhauser and Kaufingerstraße, Marienplatz to Tal, Diener‑, Wein‑ and Rosenstraße, plus the entire Viktualienmarkt.
  • Englischer Garten has no general ban, yet visitors are asked to avoid pyrotechnics near the Chinesischer Turm and Japanese Tea House due to fire risk, the Residenz courtyards and Nymphenburg palace park are closed or partially cordoned, and the zoo director welcomed the new protection as supporting animal welfare while the city urges responsible use.
