Munich Runs First Passenger Test of Autonomous Electric Bus

The MINGA consortium will use monitored weekday trials to gather safety, operational and accessibility data while keeping trained safety staff on board.

Overview

  • The prototype e‑bus carried media passengers in a supervised demonstration on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with the vehicle steering, accelerating and braking itself while a safety driver and system monitor remained ready to intervene.
  • Organizers have scheduled booked test service on line 178 from 17 November through mid‑June 2027 on weekdays and say roughly 2,000 people have registered to take part.
  • The bus is equipped with lidar, radar, multiple cameras and satellite positioning and will operate initially with a safety driver and a second onboard monitor as partners collect sensor and operational data.
  • Project MINGA is backed by about €13 million in federal funding and brings together MVG, Stadtwerke München, MAN, Ebusco, Adastec, TUM, Universität Stuttgart and other partners for an applied research trial.
  • Partners plan a staged move away from a full safety driver toward an onboard operator and later to remote supervision in an operations center while the trials measure rider acceptance and accessibility including a wheelchair space.
