Munich Removes 41 Tonnes of New Year’s Litter as Park Cleanups Continue

The city deployed 185 workers in a staged overnight operation to reopen roads quickly.

Overview

  • Street crews report about 41 tonnes collected, down from roughly 49 tonnes last year, with the city noting the first Silvestermeile on Ludwigsstraße as a feature of this year’s celebrations.
  • 185 municipal employees used sweepers, tipper trucks, multipurpose vehicles and small tractors to clear priority routes.
  • Operations were staggered: teams were in place at the Friedensengel from 00:30 to enable 03:00 traffic flow, central runs proceeded from 04:00 to midday, and work expanded across the network from 06:00.
  • Parks and green spaces saw the heaviest concentrations of debris, including Luitpoldpark, Olympiaberg, Neuhofener Berg, Riemer Park, Königsplatz, Ostpark and Westpark.
  • The gardening department, supported by external firms, is cleaning 1,300 sites totaling over 2,400 hectares, securing paths and removing glass first before hand-clearing lawns, beds and areas between shrubs.
