Munich Marks 175 Years of the Bavaria Statue With Ceremony at the Ruhmeshalle

State leaders portrayed the colossal bronze as a timeless emblem of Bavarian freedom.

  • Minister-President Markus Söder hailed the figure as a “symbol of freedom” during a festakt beside the Theresienwiese.
  • Finance Minister Albert Füracker, traditional associations and the Bergschützen Kapelle Anger took part, with a Böllerschützen salute and a ceremonial cake.
  • Conceived by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and cast in sections under Ferdinand von Miller between 1843 and 1850, the statue was unveiled in October 1850.
  • The monument rises about 19 meters to its wreath on a roughly 9-meter pedestal, weighs around 87 tonnes, and can be climbed via 125 steps into a head that holds about 25 people.
  • Interior access remains open through October 19 this season, with roughly 20,000 visitors a year making the ascent before the winter closure.
