Munich Appoints Basel Trio to Lead Münchner Kammerspiele

The decision, supported by the city’s cultural committee, sets a five-year shared intendancy that still requires final ratification by the full Stadtrat.

Overview

  • A city-appointed Findungskommission chose Anja Dirks, Antú Romero Nunes and Jörg Pohl to run the Münchner Kammerspiele as a three-person leadership team, a selection made late on Wednesday after a long meeting.
  • The Kulturausschuss of the Stadtrat has backed the recommendation and the full Stadtrat will vote on the appointment in a Vollversammlung on 25 November, a step described by officials as a formality.
  • The trio will begin on 1 September 2028 under an initial five-year contract and will move from their joint roles leading the Schauspielsparte at Theater Basel, where they have worked as a team since 2020.
  • Their joint statement says they will keep the Kammerspiele’s inclusive ensemble focus while adding international perspectives and stronger ties to the city, and plans reported include Nunes directing at least one production a year with exclusive work at the house in the first two seasons.
  • Officials noted this is the first time one of Munich’s three major theatres will be led by a shared intendancy and some operational details about how the shared post will be managed remain to be finalized by the city administration.
