Munich and Frankfurt S‑Bahn Face Weeks of Planned Disruptions as DB Sets New Turnback Rules for December

Detailed schedules start this weekend, with expanded turnback options coming on 14 December to speed recovery during incidents.

Overview

  • Munich begins with an S6 outage between Trudering and Ostbahnhof from late 24 October to early 27 October, replaced by buses due to track, cable and ordnance works tied to the second Stammstrecke.
  • Further weekend restrictions in November and early December limit access to Ostbahnhof and close S‑Bahn tracks at Berg am Laim, with only a combined S6/S8 running through the tunnel and other lines turning early in the west and east.
  • Additional Munich works bring bus replacement or truncated service on multiple lines in November, including S3 Deisenhofen–Holzkirchen, S5 Aying–Kreuzstraße, S7 Höllriegelskreuth–Wolfratshausen, airport links S1/S8 near Neufahrn and Ismaning, and S2 Erding–Markt Schwaben.
  • North of Frankfurt, engineering from 31 October to about 3 December affects S3, S4, S5 and RB15/RB16, with RB16 suspended, RB15 turning at Köppern with buses onward, and a full S3–S5 shutdown from 7 to 19 November between their northern termini and Frankfurt Süd.
  • From the 14 December timetable change, DB will allow turnbacks at additional inner‑city halts such as Hauptbahnhof, Marienplatz and Stachus, though it warns only one line can typically be turned at a time and full Stammstrecke bus replacement is not practical, favoring diversions like S8 via the Südring.
