Munich Airport Shuts for Second Time in 24 Hours on Suspected Drone Sightings

Berlin plans legal changes to permit drone shoot-downs, signaling a shift toward military support at airports.

Overview

  • Operations were suspended from 21:30 local time Friday after unconfirmed drone observations, with police reporting two simultaneous sightings near the north and south runways just before 23:00.
  • The airport said 23 arrivals were diverted, 12 were canceled, and 46 departures were canceled or delayed, affecting about 6,500 passengers, and it aimed to resume traffic at 05:00 Saturday with camp beds and food provided overnight.
  • Police deployed helicopters but said they could not quantify, identify the type of, or intercept the devices, after several drones were formally identified Thursday evening near the Erding military airfield and over the airport.
  • Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called the incidents a threat and urged that drones be shot down, as the government prepares to start reviewing air-safety laws on Wednesday to allow military intervention beyond current police authority.
  • European airports in Denmark, Norway and Poland have recently halted flights over similar incursions, EU ministers discussed an “anti‑drone wall,” and several states have pointed to Russia while responsibility remains unproven and Moscow denies involvement.
