Munich Airport Shuts Down for Second Night Over Suspected Drones

Berlin moves to expand shoot-down authority following security gaps exposed by recent incursions.

Overview

  • Police patrols reported two simultaneous drone identifications near the north and south runways shortly before 23:00 local time after operations were suspended at 21:30.
  • The airport said 23 inbound flights were diverted, 12 were canceled, and 46 departures were canceled or delayed, affecting about 6,500 passengers, with camp beds and provisions set out for those staying overnight.
  • This was the second shutdown in 24 hours, after an earlier closure canceled more than 30 flights and left roughly 3,000 travelers stranded overnight.
  • Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called the incidents a threat and urged that drones be shot down, with the government set to begin revising aviation security laws on Wednesday to broaden authority beyond police.
  • Similar disruptions have recently hit airports in Copenhagen, Oslo and Poland, several EU states have suggested Russian involvement that Moscow denies, and EU ministers discussed building an anti-drone barrier.
