Munich Airport Reopens After Overnight Drone Shutdown

The closure is the latest in a Europe-wide pattern that has accelerated plans for coordinated anti-drone defenses.

Overview

  • Air traffic control restricted operations at 10:18 p.m. local time and then suspended flights, with the airport reopening around 5:00 a.m.
  • Seventeen departures were cancelled and 15 arrivals diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Vienna, affecting about 3,000 passengers.
  • Police launched searches and deployed helicopters, but authorities have not determined the type, number or origin of the drones.
  • Lufthansa said 19 of its flights were cancelled or rerouted, including three long-haul services to Asia that will be rescheduled.
  • Recent disruptions in Denmark and Norway have prompted EU leaders to back a layered ‘drone wall’ and heightened NATO vigilance, as some officials point to Russia and Moscow issues denials.
