MUNA Bus Catches Fire on I-5 in Burbank

Authorities have opened an investigation into the blaze after the band said everyone aboard escaped unharmed.

Overview

  • A private tour bus carrying members of the indie-pop trio MUNA caught fire on the southbound Interstate 5 in Burbank after their Oct. 18 Stanford show, with the California Highway Patrol receiving a report shortly after 8:20 a.m. Monday.
  • KTLA aerial footage showed heavy fire damage and suggested the driver initially did not realize the vehicle was on fire, and the bus was pulled onto an offramp where the Burbank Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
  • MUNA posted that no one was injured but that many personal items were lost, and guitarist Naomi McPherson left a distinctive Instagram comment referencing a 'grandchild of the warlock' while returning to the tour after caring for their terminally ill mother.
  • The band says the Gets So Hot Tour will continue as planned with a scheduled Oct. 21 performance at Red Rocks, and officials have not yet determined the fire’s cause as investigations continue.
  • Beyond the immediate safety outcome, the fire destroyed personal belongings and disrupted morning commute lanes, and investigators and the band’s crew will need to assess damaged equipment and logistics for upcoming shows.
