MumbaiThane Metro Lines 4/4A Begin Trials as State Sets 2026 Opening Targets

The priority stretch in Thane now moves into statutory safety reviews before phased passenger service.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde flagged off technical trials in Thane, inspecting a 4.4 km section from Gaimukh to Vijay Garden within a 10.5 km priority stretch to Cadbury Junction.
  • Lines 4 and 4A span about 35.20 km with 32 stations linking WadalaGhatkoparMulund to Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh, and will connect with Line 11 to create an approximately 58 km elevated corridor supported by a 45-hectare Mogharpada depot.
  • Officials targeted four stations to be ready by December 2025 and the initial 10.5 km to open by April 2026, with all phases aimed for public operations by end-2026 and full corridor readiness projected in 2027, subject to clearances.
  • Passenger launch depends on Independent Safety Assessor certification followed by approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, with modern BEML six‑coach trains, future provision for eight coaches, and safety systems including fire and obstacle detection.
  • In parallel, the MumbaiAhmedabad high‑speed rail is slated to open the Surat–Billimora section by December 2027, extend to Thane in 2028 and Mumbai’s BKC in 2029, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
