Mumbai’s Reservoirs Near 99% Capacity After Heavy Monsoon Rains

BMC says the current stock can sustain the city for around 300 days, making a water cut next season unlikely.

Overview

  • As of September 17, the seven lakes held 98.87% of usable capacity, or 14,30,969 million litres, according to BMC data.
  • Modak Sagar, Vehar and Tulsi are at 100% while Middle Vaitarna is at 99.13%, Tansa at 98.85%, Upper Vaitarna at 98.73% and Bhatsa at 98.58%.
  • The system’s total useful capacity is about 14.47 lakh million litres, with levels reported at 98.82% (14.30 lakh million litres) on Tuesday morning.
  • IMD issued a red alert on Monday and a yellow alert on Tuesday as heavy rain boosted inflows; Wednesday’s forecast calls for a partly cloudy sky with moderate rainfall.
  • Lower, Middle and Upper Vaitarna plus Tansa feed western Mumbai, while the Bhatsa–Vehar–Tulsi system is treated at the Panjarpur plant and supplies the eastern parts.
