Mumbai's 125-Year-Old Elphinstone Bridge to Be Demolished for Sewri-Worli Connector

The historic bridge will close in February 2025 for a two-year reconstruction project aimed at improving connectivity, but is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions.

  • The Elphinstone Road Over Bridge, a key east-west connector in Mumbai, will be demolished starting in late February 2025 as part of the Sewri-Worli Connector project.
  • The new double-decker bridge will link Senapati Bapat Road and Dr. BR Ambedkar Road, while also connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu).
  • The Sewri-Worli Connector will reduce travel time between Sewri and Worli from nearly an hour to under 10 minutes, with completion targeted for early 2026.
  • The closure of the bridge is expected to cause severe traffic congestion, with vehicular diversions to already overburdened Tilak and Currey Road bridges.
  • Demolition will impact Prabhadevi railway station, requiring relocation of booking offices and potential train service disruptions during construction.
