MumbaiAhmedabad Bullet Train Tunnel Enters TBM Assembly Phase

The step clears the way for testing now ahead of TBM drives slated for July and October 2026.

Overview

  • NHSRCL has begun lowering and assembling two tunnel boring machines at Vikhroli for a 16 km underground section between Bandra Kurla Complex and Sawli.
  • The 16 km drive is part of a 21 km corridor to Shilphata that will include a 7 km undersea tunnel beneath Thane Creek.
  • The tunnel will be a single 13.1 m diameter tube for twin tracks, running 25 to 57 m below ground with a deepest point about 114 m under Parsik hill.
  • Three shafts at BKC, Vikhroli, and Sawli will support the work, with one TBM launching Vikhroli to BKC and the other tunneling Sawli to Vikhroli.
  • Each Mix Shield TBM is about 95.32 m long and just over 3,000 tonnes, while a Mahape casting yard is producing roughly 77,000 lining segments as the first drive targets July and the main drive October 2026.
