MumbaiAhmedabad Bullet Train Achieves 4.88 km Tunnel Breakthrough

The milestone propels the underground stretch toward completion under the IndiaJapan Shinkansen partnership.

Overview

  • The GhansoliShilphata NATM section is now through, completing 4.88 km of the 21 km BKCShilphata tunnel that includes a 7 km undersea stretch under Thane Creek.
  • Tunnel Boring Machines will excavate the remaining roughly 16 km, with the first TBMs set to arrive at JNPA this week for transport to BKC, Vikhroli and Sawli shafts.
  • Phased commissioning remains on track: SuratBilimora by December 2027, reach Thane in 2028 and full service to Mumbai BKC in 2029, according to the railway minister.
  • Japan’s latest E10 Shinkansen trains are confirmed for the corridor and Vande Bharat sets will not operate here, with Indian operations and maintenance staff already training in Japan.
  • NHSRCL reports 321 km of viaduct and 398 km of piers completed, 17 river bridges and nine steel bridges in place, over four lakh noise barriers installed, and more than 2,000 OHE masts erected along 48 km.
