Mumbai Votes in BMC Elections as BJPMahayuti and Thackeray Front Battle for Control

The first BMC contest since the Shiv Sena split features a reunited UddhavRaj Thackeray alliance seeking to reclaim India’s richest civic body.

Overview

  • Polling runs from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm across 227 single-member wards, with about 1,700 candidates on the ballot and 1,03,44,315 eligible voters.
  • More than 25,000 Mumbai Police personnel, including senior officers and specialised units such as SRPF, QRT and BDDS, are deployed for polling and counting.
  • Counting is scheduled for January 16, with 23 designated centres and secure strong rooms for EVMs and election materials.
  • The BMC has rolled out voter-comfort measures at 10,231 booths, including a two-day cleanliness drive, 4,200 mobile toilets, 6,000 wheelchairs and women-staffed pink booths.
  • The state declared January 15 a public holiday in poll-bound areas to boost turnout, with routine services curtailed and markets, including stock exchanges, closed for the day.
