Mumbai Unveils 295-Acre Central Park Plan Linking Mahalaxmi Racecourse and Coastal Road

Officials say tendering has begun under a BOT model ahead of municipal polls.

Overview

  • Architect Hafeez Contractor’s master plan was presented to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and BMC leaders, who said the park’s surface will stay fully green and the racecourse’s heritage will be preserved.
  • A 10 lakh sq ft underground sports complex is planned beneath the park with facilities for aquatic events, boxing, basketball, gymnastics, skating, and traditional Indian sports such as kho-kho and kabaddi.
  • Connectivity includes a 1.2 km underground tunnel tendered at ₹550 crore to link the park to the Coastal Road, with underground access to Metro Line 3’s Nehru Science Centre station and parking for about 1,200 cars and 100 buses.
  • Planned zones include a 12-acre city forest, 77 acres for gardens and open concert grounds, and 31 acres for a botanical garden, indoor concert arena, and a convention facility.
  • Alongside the Mumbai plan, a Thane package proposes a 260-metre viewing tower, multiple recreation and sports venues, and an 18.4 km Anandvan green corridor, with officials stating most projects are in tendering on BOT terms.
