Mumbai Unveils 295-Acre Central Park Plan at Mahalaxmi Racecourse

Officials say procurement has begun under a BOT model, with a ₹550 crore tunnel tender already out.

Overview

  • The park will combine 125 acres of the racecourse with 170 acres along the Coastal Road, keep the surface fully green except for walking paths, and preserve the venue’s heritage.
  • A 10 lakh sq ft underground sports complex is planned beneath the park with facilities for aquatics, boxing, basketball, gymnastics, skating, and Indian sports such as kabaddi and kho-kho.
  • Connectivity will include a 1.2 km underground tunnel to the Coastal Road with the tender issued, links to Metro Line 3’s Nehru Science Centre station, and an extension under Annie Besant Road up to Haji Ali.
  • Parking tied to the Coastal Road is planned for about 1,200 cars and 100 buses with underground access intended to prevent congestion on surface roads.
  • Tenders are underway on a build-operate-transfer basis, the plan maps zones such as a 12-acre city forest, 77 acres for gardens and open concerts, and 31 acres for a botanical garden and indoor arena, and a parallel Thane package includes a proposed 260-metre viewing tower and an 18.4 km green corridor.
