Mumbai Under Yellow Alert as IMD Warns of Heavy Rain Across Konkan Districts

Catchment rains have lifted reservoir stocks near full capacity, raising flood sensitivity despite improved water security.

Overview

  • The IMD has a yellow alert in force for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar from Monday morning to Tuesday morning for thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rain and gusty winds.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of the Konkan, including Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar and Sindhudurg.
  • Rainfall remained highly localized, with several western pockets recording 40–50 mm on Sunday while the island city saw 5–10 mm and eastern suburbs around 20 mm; heavy bursts were reported in areas such as Borivali and Colaba on Monday morning.
  • Forecasts indicate short partly cloudy spells before wetter conditions later in the week, with a likely Bay of Bengal depression around September 26–27 that could influence intensity and distribution.
  • BMC data show the seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai are about 99% full, reducing immediate supply strain but heightening runoff risk that can trigger waterlogging, traffic delays and rail disruptions.
