Mumbai to Open Three East–West Flyovers Virtually on Thursday

Faster east‑west commutes should follow after the works clear space for Mumbai's planned fifth and sixth suburban rail lines under MUTP‑II.

Overview

  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation says Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will virtually inaugurate the Sion, Vidyavihar and Goregaon‑Mulund flyovers at 1 pm on Thursday with deputy chief ministers and the Mumbai mayor present and live broadcasts at each site.
  • The rebuilt Sion railway overbridge replaced a 112‑year‑old unsafe span and was finished four months early using two 54.5‑metre semi‑through steel girders; Central Railway funded the main span and the redesign removes mid‑track pillars that blocked space needed for planned fifth and sixth lines.
  • The Vidyavihar flyover links Ramchandra Chemburkar Road with Lal Bahadur Shastri Road over a roughly 650‑metre corridor and is expected by the BMC to cut the east‑west travel time in the area from about 30 minutes to roughly 10 minutes.
  • The 1.26‑km Goregaon‑Mulund (GMLR) flyover near Hotel Ratnagiri in Goregaon East is a three‑by‑three‑lane structure built with precast concrete segments and curved steel spans and will feed into the wider GMLR scheme that includes planned twin tunnels between the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
  • Project delivery required coordinated rail‑civic engineering, utility relocations and new pedestrian subways, and the completed works are likely to ease junction congestion, change local travel patterns and clear the way for the MUTP‑II rail capacity upgrade that planners will now pursue.
