Overview

  • On July 15, Malad police filed an FIR against Shri G Builders & Developers and contractor Nimesh Desai under sections 106(1) and 290 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • The culpable homicide and negligent conduct charges followed a complaint by engineer’s father Vinod Sankhe and a preliminary probe that found no safety equipment had been provided.
  • Omkar Sankhe, 24, fell from an unsecured iron walkway plank on the 10th floor of the Shri Vaitri Vinayak Mangalam SRA project in Malad West and died at Zenith Hospital.
  • Investigators have begun recording testimony from site workers to establish lapses in fixing planks and supplying helmets, harnesses and safety nets.
  • The FIR underscores systemic safety failures in Mumbai’s slum rehabilitation projects and intensifies calls for stricter oversight of worker protections.
