Mumbai Speaker Limits October Road Work to Ongoing Stretches, Sets December Deadline

The directive seeks to curb fresh digging by narrowing October work to ongoing stretches with stricter IIT-led quality checks.

Overview

  • No new road excavation will proceed without a specific local demand after consultation with elected representatives.
  • Footpaths will switch to stamped concrete, and roads under nine metres wide will use mastic asphalt under norms accepted by the BMC.
  • All complaints about substandard work will be referred to IIT for technical evaluation, with the civic body to act on its findings.
  • The BMC says roughly half of the works are complete and will roll out zone-wise dashboards for public progress tracking.
  • The orders followed a high-level review with BJP leaders and senior civic officials as the Rs 17,000 crore concretisation drive resumes post-monsoon in October.
