Mumbai Inaugurates Metro Line 9 to Mira-Bhayandar and Launches Line 2B Phase 1

The expansion pushes the network past 100 km of service, second in India after Delhi.

Overview

  • Following Tuesday's inauguration led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, commercial trains start Wednesday with the integrated Lines 7–9 running 5:50 am to 11:00 pm and up to 276 weekday trips.
  • Operations are being restructured so Line 7 is integrated with Line 9 for a Gundavali–Kashigaon run, Line 2A operates independently, and Dahisar East provides a paid-area interchange that lets riders switch without exiting.
  • Phase 1 of Line 9 adds roughly 5 km and four stations from Dahisar East to Kashigaon in Mira-Bhayandar, a link officials say can cut some commutes to about 30 minutes after receiving safety clearance in January.
  • Phase 1 of Line 2B opens a 5.3–5.5 km stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden in Chembur, operating from 6:00 am to about 10:30 pm with a frequency near nine and a half minutes and 209 daily services.
  • MMRDA projects the new northern link will shift 20–30% of road commuters to rail during peak periods, easing traffic at the Dahisar Toll Plaza by an estimated 10–15%.
