Mumbai Sessions Court Acquits Ram Gopal Varma After Lok Adalat Settlement

The Dindoshi bench set aside his January cheque-bounce conviction based on a compromise memo recorded from a Lok Adalat settlement.

Overview

  • Allowing his appeal on September 13, the Dindoshi court cited a compromise memo filed through a Lok Adalat and entered an acquittal.
  • The complaint by Shree stemmed from hard disks supplied in early 2018 with tax invoices totaling ₹2,38,220.
  • Two cheques issued that year, including one dated June 1, were dishonoured, first for insufficient funds and later after a stop-payment instruction.
  • An Andheri magistrate had on January 21 convicted Varma, ordering three months’ simple imprisonment and ₹3,72,219 to the complainant, before the sentence was suspended for appeal.
  • With the settlement recorded, the sessions court disposed of the appeal and closed the related criminal proceedings.
