Mumbai Reservoirs Touch 99.5% Capacity With Multiple Lakes Overflowing

IMD yellow alerts signal continued inflows from recent catchment rains.

  • BMC data show 14,40,220 million litres in the seven lakes as of 6 a.m. on Sept. 23, equating to 99.51% of the 14.47 lakh million‑litre capacity.
  • Vihar, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Tulsi are overflowing, while the other reservoirs remain above 99% storage.
  • Catchment areas received over 50 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, and Mumbai city logged 46.18 mm between 8 a.m. Sept. 22 and 7 a.m. Sept. 23.
  • IMD has a yellow alert in place for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar with light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated heavy showers in the outlook.
  • Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Bhatsa have yet to crest, and reaching full capacity by late September is considered likely if the rainfall continues.
