Mumbai Reservoir Stocks Hit 89% as BMC Closes Dam Gates

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has closed several dam gates to manage near-capacity reservoir levels under a cloudy forecast from the India Meteorological Department.

Overview

  • Combined water stock across Mumbai’s seven reservoirs stands at 89.17% of capacity, holding 12,90,611 million litres as of August 11.
  • Tansa reservoir is at 97.92% capacity and Modak Sagar at 95.73%, with Middle Vaitarna at 94.69%, Bhatsa 87.14%, Upper Vaitarna 83.42%, Vihar 74.93% and Tulsi 85.50%.
  • Gates at Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa and Tulsi have been shut after lakes reached full or near-full levels to regulate outflows and reduce flood risk.
  • The India Meteorological Department predicts generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and isolated thundershowers in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours.
  • The BMC has set a target of 1.447 trillion litres of storage by October 1 to safeguard Mumbai’s water supply through the upcoming dry season.
