Mumbai Police Permits CPI(M) Gaza Protest at Azad Maidan

The Bombay High Court accepted the police’s assurance that the August 20 assembly will be confined to a designated area under newly drafted rules.

Overview

  • Mumbai Police informed the court that the protest will run from 3 pm to 6 pm on August 20 at the section of Azad Maidan opposite the BMC headquarters.
  • Organisers must comply with draft Public Meetings, Agitations and Processions Rules under the Maharashtra Police Act, which designate the protest area and ban provocative speeches.
  • The court intervened after questioning why Mumbai police had denied permission even though a similar anti-Gaza protest proceeded peacefully in Pune.
  • Earlier applications on June 17, June 25 and July 15 were rejected over concerns about contradicting India’s foreign policy and creating law-and-order risks.
  • After receiving the police’s assurance, the Bombay High Court disposed of the petition, though its prior rebukes of CPI(M)’s focus on international issues remain on record.
